The Book of Negroes

Well, I finished the Book of Negroes. I think I liked it.... by the end I felt like I was pushing a little to get through it, but I still wanted to know how she ended up in England. It was one of those books for me that really got me thinking and I enjoyed, but the subject matter is so heavy that you can't just cruise through it. Thanks for the recommendation, Dad and Mandy. Anyone else who gets the chance pick it up, enjoy, but give yourself time to read it. Also, I agree with dad that some little portions of the book made me wonder if I should stop reading, but they all help the reader understand the things she had to go through and the very few moments of normal life she ever enjoyed. High praise

Suzanne Collins has done it again. I just finished Catching Fire and I could not put it down. The second book may have even surpassed the first, at least in surprise and turns. I have thouroughly enjoyed this series, only now I have to wait til who knows when to read the third book. I highly recommend picking this one up. For those of you who might be turned off because it sounds like futuristic sci-fi, don't be. It is not too over-the-top weird and she focuses on the characters and their relationships while managing to weave in the elements of their society and the crucial situations they are facing. I can't give it enough praise for keeping my attention right through to the end. Well paced and well written. Much better than the Twilight series that has so many people gaga. This woman really knows how to write, not just tell an unexpected story. If you get the time, pick it up. Jen

First off, let me say that Jen I did vote, but you missed one very important movie: The Christmas Story!

I finally read Tell No One and I really enjoyed it. Right now I am reading a Christmas story by Cecelia Ahern called The Gift. I am half way through and am really enjoying it so far. She is the one that wrote PS I Love You and the TV Show Samantha Who? Anyways, I really like her books, and this one is a good read so far. -Emily

From Hutterites to Masons to Futuristic and beyond

Hey all! I have finished a couple of good reads and am in the middle of another. I found "I am Hutterite" in our library, which slightly surprised me, but I did enjoy it. I learned alot about their culture and the undercurrents that might lead to someone leaving to start fresh, or the ties that keep people there. Very interesting read when you've grown up in such close proximity to them. Made me want to learn more about their history.

I also read The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. It's a pretty easy, fast paced read with a fairly unexpected twist at the end. I enjoyed it if you're looking for a chance to escape for a while.

I am currently reading "Catching Fire" by Suzanne Collins. I read the first book, the Hunger Games, a little while ago and really enjoyed it, and this one so far is hard to put down. She does a great job of weaving together a futuristic society that isn't too strange or unbelievable with a heartwarming love story, which is clean because it is actually a young adult book. You really begin to feel right along with the main character and hope they can find a way to rebel against the all-powerful capitol. Brings up interesting ideas such as a capitol city that is totally oblivious to the plight of the country around them. I will let you know if I like the ending, but if you want to find the first one at your library, it's worth a read. - Jen

Mandy left the book "The Book of Negroes" by Lawrence Hill last time she was here, and I read it. The story line and the historical information were fascinating. It was hard to put the book down. A little risque in places, but only within the detailed episodes of personal tragedy and humiliation. Avery good read. Thank you Mandy. Dad.
I'm also reading a book called "Brain Rules", a non fiction book about rules for maintaining brain function and mental abilities. A good read, with many unbelievable facts and figures. A good read. Dad.

I've been reading books by Jennie Hansen lately. She is an LDS author. They books are cop/FBI type dramas with a romance. They obviously have LDS references but not too sappy. Fun, easy reading. Also, I am in the middle of "I Am Hutterite". A story about a girl who was born on the colony and then her family left. That's as far as I've gotten. Will keep you updated. Mom

The Hunger Games

I read the book "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins (I think) while our computer was crashed. It's about a future time when North America has been divided into 12 areas and once a year each area has to send two competitors - a boy and a girl - to the Hunger Games where they fight to the death. The last one standing wins and their division is provided with food etc. for one year while the others continue to scrape by. I wasn't sure I would like it, but I ended up really enjoying the read. It moves along at a good pace and you really start to empathize with the characters. I would recommend it. Oh, but in case you get surprised like I did and are waiting for it to wrap up, it is a series. The next one is coming out right away. I have my name on the list at the library, so I'll let you know if it's as good. I've read that it is even better. Jen

Jane Austen

I just finished reading The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen by Syrie James. I really liked it. It was written as if Jane Austen had done it, so anyone that enjoys her novels would enjoy this book. I recommend it to all fans of Jane Austen for sure. Emily

Hey, I read Dan Brown's new one, The Lost Symbol and I really enjoyed it. There is a bit of a twist and it was interesting the outcome, how religion-related it is. I would recommend it. Even though it is 400+ page, it was a quick read. Mandy

Sunday's at Tiffany's

I am reading James Patterson's book called Sunday's at Tiffany's. I am enjoying it quite a bit so far. I'm about halfway through right now. It's not one of his mystery novels, but more along the lines of his romance novels. I'll let you know how I like the rest of it. -EM

The DaVinci Code

I have finally finished reading the illustrated version of the DaVinci Code! It was so much easier for me to get through than the regular version and made a lot more sense. It helped a lot to be able to see all the artwork, buildings, statues, etc that are talked about in the book. So, if you are ever interested in reading it again or for the first time I recommend the illustrated version! -Mal

I just read a good book. Ultramarathon Man by Dean by Dean Karnazes. About a guy who gets bored with life and starts running. Ends up running all sorts of marathons, his longest being about 200 miles. Check it out. Pretty good. Mom

Hi girls. I finished Spare Change - a quick, easy, feel-good book. I am now reading The Last Lecture. So far I'm quite enjoying it. It is about a professor who finds out at about age 41 that he has pancreatic cancer and this is kind of his memories and bits of wisdom. I'll add it to the list when I finish if I think you should read it. Apparently quite a few people I've talked to really enjoyed it. Steve said one of the girls at work says her family has about 12 copies of it. Mom

Spare Change

I finally read Spare Change. It was a good quick read that passed the afternoon at work. It is good if you are looking for a cute romance. I am excited for my next book though. I have always wanted to read Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and the Da Vinci Code but could never get through them because I was always so confused as to what artwork or statue or location was being discussed. I have decided to give it one more try only this time I went out and bought the illustrated version so I can follow along better and have an idea of what he is referring to. I'll get back to you and let you know if the pictures and maps helped to make the book a more interesting read!

Fool Me Twice

Okay, I had a very unproductive day while the kids ran around in 30 degree weather and I managed to finish another book. I've added it to the list. It's called Fool Me Twice by Stephanie Black. She's an LDS author, so it's very clean. I really enjoyed the plot line, it kept me interested the whole time. I could've done without the cheesy LDS story line that was obviously the way she could get Covenant to publish it. If modern stories don't have LDS characters in them they won't even look at it. It was just too bad, because the rest of the book was great. If she had published it without religious characterization I probably would have like it even more. Still, it was an easy read with some good hooks and twists, so if you want some fun summer reading reserve it at the library. Jen

Tell...Everyone!

I just finished Tell No One and I really enjoyed it. A good summer sizzler. It kept me guessing through the entire thing, and then threw a surprise wallop at the end. Only a couple of minor language things throughout, but generally well written. Thanks for the heads up on Charley's Web. It came from the library and I was about to delve in, but maybe I won't now.... Jen

Don't rush out...

I finished Look Again. The premise of this story was really great and it had potential. There was just some unrealistic things that happened, shootings and stuff. So, this book was OK, but I wouldn't tell you that you absolutely have to read it!

It's interesting - this book was one used in a writing book I was reading a little while ago, but I didn't recognize it when you posted the title. It wasn't until I read the back that the scenario jumped out at me as familiar. Supposed to be a great suspense with excellent writing. Can't wait! Jen

Looks like i am the slowest at checking my e-mail!! I am behind! I haven't been doing a lot of reading these days but you guys have inspired me to start. It is finally almost summer, except for that white stuff all over my lawn today, and reading is one of my favorite things to do in the sun. It looks like i have a few books to catch up on. It is called Look Again. This lady adopted a child and a couple years later sees a missing person picture that looks like her kid....anyway. I will let you know how it is. Then I will start on something you have suggested. I have been anti-blogs and facebook, but I am starting.
